Scent: We think it smells of fresh jungle oil, with a touch of eucalyptus. Franks Oskars themselves say that the oil smells of ginger, chamomile, and lime, and sure you can feel it. But to explain the scent more specifically, we’d say that it’s a mix between fresh jungle oil and some eucalyptus. Kind of. Either way, it smells great.

Packaging: 30 ml bottle. Frans Oskars use a standard bottle with a standard label, and we find that just a little boring. Sure, it works, but there are no points here for thinking outside the box. The packaging is thumbs up, however ― a nice bag with a simple instruction manual and some eco-friendly facts. Once you take out the bottle, it feels a little like bringing a fragile baby bird out of its nest. Fun idea! Also available as a gift set! Oh, this was a pleasant surprise! When we opened the delivery of beard oil from Mr. Bear Family, we came upon perhaps the coolest packaging on the market today ― a toilet roll. Yes, it’s true! We bow to creativity and become really curious about how the oil measures up to the tough competition. Let’s find out, right now.

Scent: Fresh lime. We’d like to say that this oil has a perfect blend of scent and strength. If we try to explain what we mean, we end up with a soapy smell with hints of roses and potpourri. It just smells clean! Two thumbs up from the whole panel. Oh, how fun it is to stumble upon a refreshing beard oil, every now and then. Sometimes it happens that you just jump in your seat as your brain shapes images from the smells you take in through your nose. Some are transported to the docks of Sydney, others see rolling fields, and we… ended up in granddad’s outhouse. The oil is available in two sizes, 10ml and 50ml.

Scent: Careful but fresh scent of driftwood. We had to think long and hard before managing to pinpoint this oil’s scent, but eventually, we agreed that it has a “fresh scent of driftwood”. Not only is the oil eco-friendly and has that raw, opaque appearance, but it also smells just wonderfully of… hazelnut.

Keep your eyes peeled for the bearded skull, and you’ll find Broder Joe’s entire selection of beard oils (there are four different oils, today). Hmm… Italian beard oil with a smell of Japan… What would that result in? Well, we’ll tell you right now. Sure, the slightly hard-to-pinpoint smell works just as well for the Nobel dinner as well as a boys’ night out, but it smells just a little too strong for our taste. Though overall a good and stable oil for all the bearded men out there.

Rumble 59 – Mandarin

Summary:
If you really like mandarins and fruity beard oils – look no further! We’ve found the ultimate oil for all the fruit lovers out there. Rumble 59 Mandarin fits like a glove for your beard and smells of mandarin all the way to the tip of the dropper. Fresh and fruity all the way to the tip of the dropper ― that’s our consensus on Rumble 59 – Mandarin beard oil. This feels like a unique oil, especially aimed at all the fruit lovers out there. For us, it’s a bit too much of a good thing, however.

Scent: Sun ripe mandarins. Imagine that you’re tearing through the peel of a mandarin, pressing out the juice, removing all the seeds, and then work it all into a slightly thicker oil ― you’ll have this beard oil in your hand. It smells of mandarin, through and through (which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a bit much for our taste).
Packaging: 50 ml bottle. A little boring with a standard bottle, but the cool label makes this oil stand out from the masses. Thumbs up for both appearance and the dropper.
Overall impression: A good choice for fruit lovers. This beard oil is of a slightly thicker consistency than many others on the market, which makes it sit nicely in your beard while also wrestling down even the most flyaway of hairs. A good choice for those who like fruity oils.

Beard Monkey – Sweet Tobacco

Summary:
Finally, we’ve reviewed Beard Monkey’s beard oil, and the whole panel was pleasantly surprised. Despite having a hard time detecting the smell of “sweet tobacco”, and instead of agreeing that this beard oil does have that slightly smoky coconut smell shared with the classic sun oil Hawaiian Tropic, we don’t think it fits very well in our beards. We’ve gotten several requests to try out Beard Monkey’s beard oil, so here is the anticipated review. We were excited, to say the least when we unscrewed the cap and took our first sniffs. Vi smelled, and tried to find that promised scent of sweet tobacco ― but all we got was a flashback to lazy days in our youth spent on the beach, oiled up with Hawaiian Tropic.

Scent: Sweet tobacco ― no. Hawaiian Tropic ― yes! The fact that it smells almost exactly like Hawaiian Tropic isn’t a bad thing, in itself. It has that fresh scent of smoky coconut, and that’s not bad, either. We do however have a hard time detecting that “sweet tobacco”, but overall we all give this one a thumbs up.
Packaging: 50 ml bottle. Dropper ― hurrah! As usual, we think a dropper should be standard, and this bottle has a cocky red version, which takes its rightful place in the bathroom cabinet. The label could do with an update, however, seeing as how it’s a bit too “simple” for our taste.
Overall impression: Good oil if you like smoky coconut. Good and proper beard oil with a scent that lasts. We did have to rearrange our expectations concerning an oil with “sweet tobacco scent”, but we also fancied the fresh “Hawaiian Tropic scent”. Thumbs up from all of us!

Summary:
Perhaps the coolest bottle on today’s market. Indeed, it smells of pine with a hint of vanilla and has a clever little attachment so that you can hook it on your keychain. Those Finns know how to cook up a good beard oil. Thumbs up from us!

Scent: Pine needles rubbed in vanilla. “A clear scent of pine needles, mixed with vanilla” was the consensus for this beard oil. After wearing it for several days, we can say that it holds its scent well, and works for both everyday occasions as well as more special ones.
Packaging: Perhaps the coolest bottle on the market, though with points docked for the dosage method. We give the highest points for the keychain attachment, but also have to take a step back due to the dosage itself. It’s hard to adjust the amount of oil through the opening, which means you often end up with too much in your hand. A dropper underneath the screw cap would be preferred.
Overall impression: Affordable. Well, our neighbors to the east know what they’re doing. A well-balanced beard oil that might have the coolest bottle on today’s market. A clean scent of pine, with hints of vanilla, puts this little bugger high up on our list of favorites. A big added plus for the bottle, and added minus for the dosage.

Nôberu Feather Beard Oil – Sandalwood

Summary:
Noberu has a few lighter versions of their beard oils as well, like this Feather Beard Oil – Sandalwood. However, we think this one is beaten by its big brother, Heavy, both in scent and consistency.

Scent: Newly-built sauna with hints of burnt wood paneling. Hmm… Sandalwood. We sniff to the point where we’re nearly hyperventilating before we manage to describe the smell in words. Because it smells like (according to us) like a newly-built sauna. A soft woody scent with a touch of burnt sauna paneling ― close your eyes and imagine it, and you’ll probably understand what we mean (…or maybe not).
Packaging: 60ml bottle. The durable little plastic bottle looks both nice and exclusive from all angles, and the amazing pump makes it super easy to get just the right dosage. Full marks, here.
Overall impression: Good oil that didn’t quite live up to the expectations. Though a bit Hurrah! for the bottle itself. Right, if we were to brand this one… Don’t get us wrong, we really do like Noberu and their beard products, but there is something about this scent that makes us hesitant to give it the highest score. Perhaps it’s the reminder of a sauna that makes us give this beard oil “just” a strong 4,5 on our 5-point scale.

Gents/Vision Haircare

Summary:
When we first laid eyes on this bottle, with its thoroughly inspiring label, we thought the contents would be just as boring. But oh, how wrong we were. This oil got an immediate thumbs up from everyone on the test panel, and if only this beard oil gets an aesthetic upgrade, it will become a bestseller in no time.

Scent: Lemon, mint, soap, and an old wooden box. When we unscrewed the cap of this 50ml bottle from Gents/Vision haircare and put our noses to work, it was hard to stop sniffing. We inhaled the fumes over and over and tried to put the scent into words as well as we could. Citrus? Yes! A slight touch of mint? Perhaps. A hundred-year-old wooden box with oil stains? Sure, if you want it badly enough.
Packaging: 50ml bottle. As we mentioned earlier… the label… gets… lowest marks. Here, there is much work to be done. Bring in a real formatter/AD/illustrator, and give the bottle a real identity, and sales will skyrocket.
Overall impression: Very good oil with boring packaging. As always, one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and if we’d done that with this beard oil, we probably would have given it bottom marks immediately. This is a very good and fragrant oil that gets thumbs up from the whole test panel.

Recipe for Men Beard Elixir

Summary:
Hmm… How do we sum up this little bugger? The first time we sniffed this one, we were a little hesitant, but it actually grew on us after a while. We like the bottle, give a thumbs-up for the dropper, and we think the “flap” on the label is creative (but also a bit annoying). This little oil caught our eye due to two things ― the plastic bottle, and the “flap”. That it then comes in packaging that most remind you of a salve from the pharmacy, might throw you off a bit, but we still went ahead and tested this one out with a mind as open as possible.

Scent: Actually smells a bit like the sports drink, Pripps Plus. Are you old enough to remember the sports drink, Pripps Plus? Then you’re not too far away from the scent of this oil. It’s fresh, it’s fruity, it’s absolutely not too much for our noses. But… if you really love citrus ― go for it!
Packaging: 25 ml bottle. Good-looking, stylish, and effective is what we’d like to call it. The bottle is made from plastic, and the label has a little “flap” with product information that sticks out from the bottle. Sure, it might feel just a bit crazy, but honestly, it’s also quite annoying. Bonus points, as usual, for the glass dropper.
Overall impression: Good, but a little fruity for our taste. An intensely fresh citrus scent that nearly knocks you over is what makes us approach this oil with caution. Because we believe that this one makes it impossible to combine with your daily perfume. A big YES for the citrus lovers ― an equally resounding NO for… those who aren’t as fond of citrus.

Proraso

Summary:
Rather an okay beard oil with hints of eucalyptus, menthol, cedarwood (and perhaps a little caramel?). This Italian oil is one of the bestsellers among beard wearers throughout Europe, but we don’t really think this one beats any of the Swedish contestants. The oil sits nicely in the beard, though, and on the skin. Specially developed for the slightly bigger beards out there. Bonus points for the dropper. Proraso was probably the first beard oil we noticed in the shops a few years ago, but we’ve never tried it. Until now. With a big dose of expectation and an even bigger dose of hope, we opened the little orange bottle and crossed our fingers. We quickly realized, however, that our dreams were not to come true, this time.

Scent: Eucalyptus tablets… and cough syrup. Yes, at first we thought it smelled good, but the more we thought about it, the more this beard oil just reminded us of grandma’s green eucalyptus tablets you used to stuff your mouth within the early 80s. Goodness! Add a touch of cough drops, and you have our (not too flattering) scent description for this model.
Packaging: 30 ml bottle. Neither great nor terrible. A yellow lion on an orange background and a big flag ― no surprises here. Comes in a box with a clear description of how you should go about applying the oil. As usual… a huge plus for a proper dropper.
Overall impression: Okay (but that’s it). Well, this one didn’t really get in the good graces of our test panel. We’d spend all days of the week and all our money on one of the Swedish candidates of our top list, instead.

Brazil’s Lion Tamer’s Beard Oil

Summary:
Do you like the smell of sawdust? Then you’ll love this beard oil from Brazil’s. Immediately when we opened the cap, we were transported to an early 20th-century lumberyard. Sure, the scent definitely has its charm, but we think it’s just a little overpowering. It’s always especially fun to try really good Swedish products, like Brazil’s Lion Tamer’s Beard Oil. We’ve tested “Sawdust”, and here are our thoughts and impressions about this product.

Scent: Sawdust. Period. Well, it does smell like sawdust. Lots of sawdust. If you grew up near a lumberyard, or feel this whole deforestation business is something deep in your soul, this beard oil may fit like a glove. We, however, think the scent maybe a little too strong.
Packaging: 30 ml bottle. One of the main disadvantages (and points of irritation) is the lack of a real dropper. Brazil’s beard oil has was we call an “idiot cap”, which means that you simply have to shake the drops out into your hand. This easily leads to drops ending up somewhere else or getting too much oil when it’s time to apply it to your beard. The label is classically attractive and definitely brings the mind to lion tamers of the circus. The label does feel a bit too cluttered and difficult to read, though.
Overall impression: Hmmm… for emergencies. Even if the oil does its job of making your beard both soft and shiny, the difficulty of getting the drops out of the bottle bothers us. Add a dropper, and we’ll give it a thumbs up. We also think the sawdust smell is just a bit too strong.

The Brighton Beard Company – Mandarin & Cedarwood

Summary:
If you’re the type of person who stands around and sniffs all the fruits when getting groceries at the local shop, this little bugger might fit you like a glove. The oil practically breathes fresh mandarin (and a tiny hint of wood) and works for most occasions. A slight downside is that the scent fades rather quickly. This little bugger sure is a little… bugger. At first sniff, the senses practically do a somersault, screaming “Hurrah, what a great beard oil!”, but after a while, the doubts set in, and we sit there trying to put our feelings into words. What we can say is that this oil will succeed BIG TIME among all the fruit lovers.

Scent: 98 percent mandarin, 2 percent wood. Well, it does have a strong scent of mandarin, but we have a hard time detecting that cedarwood the label is on about. We’d say there’s 98 percent mandarin and 2 percent forest in this bottle.
Packaging: 10ml or 30ml bottle. We bought a 10ml bottle for the test, and it definitely works. The label is clean and stylish, and it has that sailor/pirate look that suits it so perfectly.
Overall impression: Fruity as hell. As we said, this one is a bit tricky to summarize, but we’ll make an honest attempt. If you like mandarin, the choice is simple. If you want something a bit more manly in terms of scent, you might want to look somewhere else. Despite the powerful scent, we didn’t think it lasted particularly long. After an hour or so, you started wondering if you really remembered the oil in the bathroom, this morning. Bonus points for the dropper.

Golden Beards – Toscana

Summary:
We can say that we were expecting more from this Danish beard oil, but no dice.
The scent is too strong and doesn’t impress in any way, and the bottle and label are both quite boring, all of which prompts us to give this oil a thumbs-down.

Scent: Strong lemon juice topped with a fistful of black pepper. If we had to try and describe how Golden Beards – Toscana smells, this is where we end up; Imagine that you’re making yourself a strong lemon drink, and you happen to drop in a jar of black pepper. You try to sift the pepper out, but the drink has already taken on the flavor. Now put your nose by the drink and sniff ― THAT’S what this beard oil smells like!
Packaging: 30ml bottle. It seems as though all kinds of people are now making their own beard oils, slapping on a more or less designed label, and trying to sell it as the best beard oil out there. Golden Beards uses a 30ml standard bottle with a dropper, as well as a barely passable label to show off. We are not impressed.
Overall impression: Unimpressive. It’s always fun to try new beard oils, but this one fell rather flat. The scent is intrusive, the bottle and label both get low marks, and we just can’t see ourselves using this oil under any circumstances.

Our first thought when we got our hands on this one, was how lovely the label and the packaging were. Expectations rose, and we so badly wanted this scent to make us stand up and cheer. What we got was anything but cheer-worthy.

MenRock – Blues

Summary:
You could say that our very low expectations were definitely fulfilled. It’s rare for us to come across a beard oil as boring and nondescript as this one. The scent is so boring you fall over, and the label looks like it belongs on a global budget brand of deodorant. Want to know more about our thoughts? At first glance, this beard oil feels dangerously mass-produced and impersonal. It doesn’t really promise anything, which keeps any expectations at a reasonable level. Which perhaps is for the oil’s benefit.

Scent: Citrus (zero points for creativity) As mentioned, the expectations weren’t exactly sky-high when we unscrewed the cap of this impersonal bottle, and when we put our noses to it, our enthusiasm was low, to say the least. The team behind this scent definitely hasn’t gone all out developing it, and for the sake of being nice, the panel concludes that it smells like… citrus. That’s it! This oil is unfortunately so boring, it’s sad.
Packaging: 10ml or 29ml bottle. It’s not enough that the scent doesn’t really raise any eyebrows, the bottle is delivered without packaging, and with a label that looks like it belongs on some globally low-budget deodorant. We must give some points for the dropper, though. Thumbs up for that!
Overall impression: No, no, no! Nah, this half measure doesn’t really suffice for any of us men. When you go through the trouble of producing a beard oil, developing the scent, designing a label, and sending it off to shops, shouldn’t you at least try to make something special out of it? It really feels like we just threw money away with this oil. Boo!

The Bearded Man Co-Race Day

Summary:
One of the most prominent brands of beard oil is the English brand, The Bearded Man Co. Their very popular beard oil is available in almost 30 different scents so that each and everyone can find their favorite (or choose according to the occasion). With scents like Race Day, Irish Moss, or Steel, The Bearded Man Co has really found their niche on the market. But the scent “Race Day” was, unfortunately, a huge disappointment. None of us are great amaretto enthusiasts (because that’s exactly what this smells like), so, unfortunately, we’ll be putting this one back in the bathroom cabinet to be forgotten.

Scent (Race Day): In our noses… Amaretto. With expectations as high as this, perhaps it wasn’t too surprising that we were let down, but truth is that the name is just completely wrong for this scent. It smells like amaretto… and that’s one of the worst things we know. Okay, the Bearded Man Co offers more than 30 scents, so we could find another that suits our taste (or rather, smell), but they can’t fool us like this. Shame.
Packaging: Stylish 10ml or 30ml bottle. A small and unimpressive transparent bottle with a boring label. It looks like they just threw some company names, product names, and other stuff to try to convince you to buy it.
Overall impression: Well… We feel tricked. We bought one. We won’t be buying another.

The Bearded Man Co – Sandalwood

Summary:
When we got around to testing “Sandalwood” a few weeks after the disappointment that was “Race Day”, we were hoping for a positive experience, but no. Sandalwood did not tickle our senses either, and there are so many other better and more fun alternatives out there.

Scent (Sandalwood): We thought it smelled like cinnamon rolls. “It smells like cinnamon buns”, says one. “Nah, it smells like an entire flower shop,” says another. Sure, it sounds good to call a scent Sandalwood, but we don’t think it really matches reality. This is a forgettable scent.
Packaging: 10 ml or 30 ml bottle. The Bearded Man insists on delivering their beard oils without a proper dropper, and it irks us to no end. Honestly, how much could a little dropper possibly cost? Come on!
Overall impression: Nope, not this one either. They got another chance, they didn’t take it. Okay, we’ve now tried two of Bearded Man’s big selection, but it doesn’t bode well when both tests get the lowest marks. Maybe we’ll try a third, someday, but they’ll really have to get their act together. Our consensus is that there are plenty of other better and more fun alternatives than Sandalwood on the market.

Summary:
This oil offers no surprises at all, but instead just smells like the everyday man thinks a beard oil should smell. And how fun is that?

Scent: As you’d expect beard oil to smell. Do the math! “It smells like gin!” the first one exclaims. “It smells like JUNIPER!!” yells the other. We kept at this for a while, until we agreed that the scent isn’t enough to place it among the top favorites. It just smells like you’d expect a beard oil to smell. A little pine-y and a little oily. No added points to speak of. Sorry.
Packaging: 30 ml bottle. Eve here, it feels rather neutral. An okay bottle with a (barely) acceptable label. The dropper is good, though, and that’s always a plus.
Overall impression: If you want to take the completely safe (but boring) route with both braces and a belt
